WALK 4

SHIBAKOEN, AZABU-JUBAN, ROPPONGI & AKASAKA

ABOUT THE WALK

This walk will take you over the hills of Tokyo. It starts out low-key at one of the first publicly accessible parks in Tokyo and the grounds of a big temple and gradually builds to ultimately end in the always bustling Roppongi and Akasaka neighborhoods. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for this walk and bring along a healthy appetite.

THE NEIGHBORHOODS

The Shibakoen neighborhood is a great place to take photos of some of Japan’s best-known sights. You’ll find the Zojoji Temple here, which was featured in the movie Wolverine, and the iconic Tokyo Tower in the background is an absolute must-see. Shiba Park surrounds the temple and is worth exploring. You can also see the great gate that survived fires and wars.

Azabu-Juban is a dynamic neighborhood with nice shopping streets. It is home to many of Tokyo’s affluent residents. In the past it was where Tokyo’s horse market was located. Nowadays, you’ll find many standing wine bars and Japanese restaurants where you sit on crates, as well as many hidden cocktail bars (be sure to look up). In the summer during the Obon vacation period, there’s a huge festival that you won’t want to miss—the entire neighborhood becomes filled with food stands and there’s music everywhere. Azabu-Juban has a bit of a small-town feel and isn’t as big as neighboring Roppongi.

Roppongi has a more upscale vibe, thanks to the presence of so many hotels. The area also has a vibrant night scene with many bars and clubs. There are plenty of venues where you can catch live music and sometimes they’ll even let you on stage yourself, if you’re good at holding a tune or can play an instrument.

Akasaka is an area with a long history. It was first named in the early 17th century, and the lowest-lying area served as protection for the nearby Edo Castle. It was also home to some of the area’s poorer populations. Higher up in the hills lived the wealthy lords. To a certain extent this division still exists in Akasaka today. The cobblestone streets of the low-lying area are where you’ll find entertainment, whereas higher up in the hills the scene is quieter.
